Mobile malware is making the rounds via the instant messaging application WhatsApp, and it’s targeting Indian defense and security personnel.

Messages claiming to be from government agencies, such as the National Investigation Agency and the National Defense Academy, include malicious files named “NDA-ranked-8th-toughest-College-in-the-world-to-get-into.xls” and “NIA-selection-order-.xls,” according to The Economic Times.

An advisory was issued to defense, paramilitary, and police staff alerting them of the malware threat, which has the ability of siphoning personal information including login credentials, banking passwords, as well as PIN codes.

Although the malware is currently formatted as an MS Excel file, officials have not ruled out that it could also be formatted as MS Word or .PDF files.
