The internal audit function must be tactful in conveying bad news within the organization to ensure it is easily accepted.

Similar to doctors - although they share news that is much worse - a significant amount of work needs to go into preparing for these difficult discussions.

There are exercises that experts suggest internal auditors go through to make bad news more easily accepted. These include not focusing on the individual’s personal traits, rather focusing on the work process, and practicing the ability to avoid using “you,” instead opting for “I” when discussing how as an internal auditor one sees the potential issues at hand.

Additionally, not all bad news should be delivered face-to-face, there are times when it must be shared in written form.
